PETERSBURG INTERCULTURAL CELEBRATION
Annual event to celebrate all cultures with food, music, children's games, and more! POPLAR LAWN PARK
SELF-GUIDED TOUR
BATTLE OF PETERSBURG 1781
The British invaded Petersburg on April 25, 1781 near the end of the Revolutionary War. A big battle ensued. The battlefield is now well marked, and you can tour the battlefield by car in about a half hour.
Pick up a brochure at the Siege Museum or the Old Towne Visitor Center for directions and info on the battle. Most of the battle took place in Old Towne. You can use the brochure as your guide and walk the Old Towne portion of the battle in about 25 minutes, starting at the YMCA and ending at the entry to Pocahontas.
Bring a friend. Finish your tour at one of Old Towne's watering holes.
Petersburg's Department of Tourism will offer a new walking tour of Old Towne this summer. The Whispers of Old Petersburg tour will explore tales of history, scandals, patriots and other citizens across the centuries with a few strange stories from the memoirs of Dr. John H. Claiborne (MA, MD, CSA).
Call 804-733-2400, 9:00-5:00, for more information. We recommend walking shoes for this approximately 1 hour tour.

STORIES-N-STOREFRONTS DEBUTS AT FRIDAY FOR THE ARTS!
What do you get when you mix art, windows, and downtown Petersburg? Stories-n-Storefronts! Petersburgs new initiative, which helps to clean, restore and decorate the windows of vacant buildings. The grand unveiling of the first phase of the project will take place this Friday, July 11 in conjunction with Friday for the Arts!, beginning at 6pm at the Downtown Express Building, 110 N. Sycamore Street. Come out and watch the story unfold!
Join fellow Petersburgers as we tour three re-designed windows on Upper Sycamore and learn about the historyand potentialof these now vacant buildings. This new initiative was inspired by the movement in Richmond called Vacant Spaces, Artful Places. Seeking to invigorate downtown Petersburg, Gwen Cooper and the Army-Community Heritage Partnership Property Development Committee, along with the Phoenix Project Summer Class of 2008, has designed several windows to help kick off this initiative. Each storefront has a different theme that celebrates the vibrancy that still is essentially Petersburg. Stories-n-Storefronts is grateful to Gwen Cooper, the City of Petersburg, Laura Willoughby and the City Museum staff, Raymond Wilson, Ronnie Thompson, artist Jerome Wiggins, Roberta Purcell, The Gardeners Gate, Appomattox Regional Governors School and the Phoenix Project Nonprofit Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship students for making these displays possible.
